David & Ashley Petersen: Family

I grew up as a missionary kid to parents Dan and Kathy Petersen who served as bible translators for many years in Burkina Faso, West Africa.  I spent the first half of my childhood in Burkina Faso being home schooled as well as attending boarding school in a neighboring city.  Growing up in Africa was definitely a big part of what defines me today and was a big influence on my desire to become a full time missionary.  I came back to the United States with my parents, brother, and sister around 1999 and integrated into US culture in Morton, Illinois.  After completing Jr. High and High School in Illinois, I came out to Spokane, Washington in order to train for Missionary Aviation with Moody Bible Institute Aviation.  It was in my first year of the 5-6 year Moody Aviation program that I met my wife Ashley.  At Moody Aviation I received my Airframe and Powerplant certificates in maintenance as well as my Commercial, Instrument, and Flight Instructor certificates as a pilot.  After graduating from Moody we began the application process to MAF and worked at MAF headquarters in the maintenance shop for six months where I was able to gain my Inspection Authorization as a mechanic.  In July 2013 we were accepted into MAF as career missionaries and assigned to Eastern Congo.

  • Born in Illinois and raised as a missionary kid in Burkina Faso, West Africa
  • Led to Christ by the godly example of family and friends
  • Grew to love aviation and missions, desiring to serve with MAF from a young age
  • Graduated Moody Bible Institute Aviation in Spokane, WA
  • Holds Airframe, Powerplant, and Inspection Authorization certificates as a mechanic and Commercial, Instrument, and Flight Instructor Instrument certificates as a pilot

I grew up in a small town in Idaho called Spirit Lake. My parents, Randy and Lynne Anderson,  are missionaries to America through American Missionary Fellowship here in the Northwest region of the United States. I attended public schools all-throughout my education. During the summers I would work at a Bible Camp called Cocolalla Lake Bible Camp that my Father was director of for many years. This is where I was first introduced to being a Missionary myself, outside of my parents calling. I decided after graduating high school that I would like to attend at least one year of bible college. I moved to Spokane to attend Moody Bible Northwest and take the Biblical Studies Courses. That is where I met my husband David and joined him on this life journey of bringing the Gospel to the farther corners of the world.
